Cairns State High School was founded in 1917 and moved to its present site in 1923. Located on a 5 hectare block; Cairns State High School is a 5 minute walk from the Cairns Central Business District, 3 blocks back from the Cairns Esplanade and 7 -10 minutes drive from the Cairns International and Domestic Airports.
Cairns State High School has a very proud and distinguished history with Traditional Values, Academic Excellence, Excellence Programs in Music, Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Sport, High Quality Teaching supported by Technology and International Education.
The school philosophy and objectives statement aligns the school’s goals, values, effective practices and programs, and which endorses the school’s traditions, innovations, future focus and global outlook.
The school currently comprises 13 buildings:
- 37 general classrooms
- 7 science laboratories
- 14 computer laboratories (ratio of computers to students is - 1:5)
- 2 multi- media laboratories
- 5 dedicated art rooms including a photo developing darkroom
- 11 practical arts rooms for furnishing, engineering, hospitality / catering practices and textile studies
- A dance studio
- A well resourced library with 23 networked workstations
- Sports complex - including a competition standard court with markings for basketball, netball, volleyball, 3 badminton courts, indoor soccer; 2 classrooms; a weights room; male and female toilets, showers and change rooms; a large storage facility and a staffroom
- Performing arts complex - drama rooms, music practice rooms and orchestra and choir practice area
- A sick bay with a full time attendant
- Newly completed building specially designed for the Inclusion Program
- All classrooms, apart from those for practical subjects, are air-conditioned or have ceiling fans.
The outdoor facilities at Cairns State High School include a 25m swimming pool; netball and basketball courts; shade cloth area which includes - 2 netball courts; 2 volleyball courts; 2 European courts; 2 indoor soccer; 6 mini tennis courts; 2 beach volleyball courts; 2 cricket practice nets and many track facilities. Extensive lawn areas, paved and shaded areas as well as established garden beds and bench seating adorn the school grounds.
Cairns State High School has an extensive pastoral care network involving Form Teachers, Year Coordinators Heads of Department, Year Level Administrators and Care Corner Personnel (Behaviour Support Officer, Chaplain, Community Education Counsellor, Guidance Officer, School Based Youth Health Nurse, Youth Support Coordinator, Sick Bay Attendant). |
