The College Mission is: "To motivate to learn; to teach to think; to encourage to imagine, and to show the compassion to care globally". Benton Junior College is committed to developing and nurturing the whole person; a person with a positive self image, who seeks excellence and respects the rights of others. The College’s intent is to make learning relevant and meaningful to children. The focus is on children as capable individuals and as active constructors of their own learning.
Children are encouraged to develop a sense of identity and self-worth, recognising their own strengths, talents and areas for improvement. A flexible, happy and non-judgemental environment allows children to take risks and draw on their natural curiosity to research and confidently verbalize innovative ideas. The positive climate encourages cooperation, positive behavior and effective communication between teachers, children and peers. Each child is given the opportunity to grow and develop a love of learning in a challenging yet safe environment.
Benton Junior College provides challenging programs that respect the individual nature and experience of each child. The curriculum, based on the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO)– Primary Years Program (PYP) involves children in active inquiry, drawing on their own experience to assist in gaining a greater understanding and appreciation of the world in which they live. They develop the skills, ability and knowledge required for a purposeful and productive role in society. Teachers work co-operatively in teams to bring out the best in each child, recognising that there are different ways of learning and different styles of teaching. There are high expectations of each child and resources and opportunities are provided for all children to excel.
Benton Junior College provides comprehensive programs that prioritise literacy, numeracy and an inquiry approach to learning. Enrichment programs are provided weekly for children in Health and Physical Education, Music, LOTE (Japanese), Art and ICT. Notebook computers in classrooms and learning pods are wirelessly networked and enable children to access Learning Technologies in an integrated manner. Globally focused whole college Fellowship days, Excursions, Literacy Support Program, Learning Journeys, Instrumental Music lessons, Perceptual Motor Program, Outdoor Education, Camping, Assemblies, Gifted Program and Sports enrich the curriculum.
Parents are actively encouraged to be a major part of the learning process through involvement in activities at college and at home. |
