Luanda International School (LIS) opened in 1996 and occupies a purpose-built facility south of the city centre. The school continues to expand rapidly to meet the demands of the burgeoning Angolan economy. LIS will have over 600 students for the academic year 2010-11. Further major construction to improve its Media - Library, Physical Education and PYP programme facilities is due for completion in September 2011.
LIS is accredited by CIS and by the NEASC as well as being authorized to offer the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme of the International Baccalaureate Organization. The School has a strong commitment to community service and has been involved in a variety of major local projects through the various courses on offer. Experienced international staff have been recruited from around the world and reflect the international character of the school.
The School year is from August to June, in three trimesters. English as an Additional Language (EAL) support is available. Portuguese and Spanish are the additional languages offered throughout the School. The School does not provide transport services, this is organised by individual families, compounds and companies. The School has a cafeteria which provides a hot lunch meal as an option.
There is a Primary and Secondary Student Council. An After-School programme runs from 15:00-16:00 each day, activities include: boys’ and girls’ basketball, boys’ soccer, a swimming team, computer club ands school newspaper.
